Tsukiji Kaisendon- Holland Village, Singapore

“Have you heard of Tsukiji in Holland Village?”

I found out about Tsukiji Kaisendon in the way that most people do- word of mouth. I was having dinner with some friends when the topic of meals that are a good value for money came up.

As a very big fan of negitoro- I did not find too many outlets offering it during my time in Sydney, often resorting to purchasing my own toro cuts from the Sydney Fish Market and making it myself.

My own versions had a lot more green onions, fuller bodied soy sauce mixed through to impart a deeper umami and occasionally smokier flavour homogeneously into the negitoro mix. Despite my adulterations to the formula, there is nothing better than coming back to the classics done swimmingly well.

Negitoro Don with an Egg Yolk (SGD$18.90)

A classic at under SGD20. We were also presented with a small appetiser and a bowl of miso soup, provided complimentary, ensuring we left sated.

Tsukiji Kaisendon finds itself ticking several checkboxes for Singaporeans- a worthwhile combination of value for money, speedy service and good quality Japanese food, thus securing it’s place as a local gem, evident by the long queues seen snaking in front of their outlet both during the week and moreso on weekends. Similar lunch crowds were also seen in another affiliated outlet located at Bukit Timah Plaza.

I have found best success at securing a seat by going just outside their usually busy lunch hours.
